A tummy tuck is also called an abdominoplasty and is a procedure that rids the abdomen of folds of skin and tightens the skin of the tummy. It is often used along with a liposuction procedure, which gets rid of the fat beneath the skin. Tummy tucks also reduce the appearance of stretch marks on the body.

The ideal candidate for a tummy tuck is someone who is in good physical shape or who have lost weight and have excess folds of skin and/or fat in the abdominal area. Women who have had children and who have had a laxity of the underlying muscles of the abdomen often have problems strengthening those muscles. An abdominoplasty can shorten and tighten the muscles as well as reducing the excess skin. Older patients who have had a loss of elasticity to their abdominal skin also do better with an abdominoplasty.

People who should avoid having a tummy tuck include those who are considering having more children, which will undo the effects of the first tummy tuck. In addition, if you are severely overweight, you will not get good effects from a tummy tuck. If you are diabetic, a smoker or have visible scars from previous abdominal surgeries, you may not be a good candidate for tummy tuck procedures. Tummy tucks leave their own surgical scars, usually along the bikini line so you need to expect to have a scar at the end of the procedure although it can usually be hidden beneath your underwear.

Results

Tummy tucks do three things: 1) they tighten skin that has lost its elasticity. 2) They tighten muscles that are lax from childbirth or lack of exercise. 3) They remove excess fat if necessary to make the outcome look the best possible. The results are often long lasting, especially if you begin an exercise program after you have an abdominoplasty and if you eat well after the surgery. Abdominoplasty is not a good substitute for a healthy lifestyle and eating properly.

Procedure

Abdominoplasty procedures are done under general anesthesia and require that you have a one to two night stay at the hospital afterward. You will receive an incision along the bikini line and will undergo a procedure that takes about two hours to do. You should stop smoking long before you have the procedure and you cannot take aspirin or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications before the procedure and up to a week prior to the procedure. Expect to have staples or sutures, although sometimes the sutures are invisible and completely absorbable (subcutaneous suturing). During the procedure, you may have another scar where the doctor replaces the navel into its proper position following the removal of excess skin and tissue.

Types

There are three types of tummy tuck. There is the standard tummy tuck with bikini cuts and the belly button or navel cut from the surrounding skin. The stretched muscles are tightened and the excess fat is removed. The skin is redraped across the belly and excess skin is removed. The incision is closed and the umbilicus is replaced into its proper position. The abdomen is then wrapped tightly so as to keep the bleeding to a minimum.

Mini

A mini tummy tuck involves only removing the skin and fat below the level of the umbilicus so there is just a long bikini scar and a thinner abdomen as a result. An extended tummy tuck involves removing skin and fat from both the abdomen and your back. The scar will extend along the back as well as the lower abdomen.

Complications

Complications of a tummy tuck include having a poor outcome, infection, bruising, and hematoma formation. The wrap placed around the stomach after surgery reduces the last two complications.

Medical Malpractice Lawyers

If you are unhappy with the outcome of any cosmetic surgery you should initially discuss your reservations with the surgeon who carried out the work to see if he has any proposals to rectify the problem. The surgeon may be willing to make a refund or may provide further corrective surgery. If you are unable to resolve the matter directly with the surgeon you should take advice from a medical malpractice lawyer with a view to claiming compensation. Our medical malpractice lawyers offer advice at no cost on liability and an estimate of the amount of compensation that you are likely to be awarded for a failed tummy tuck, with no charge and without obligation.
