Forehead Lift

A brow lift is also called a forehead lift and is a commonly performed facial cosmetic procedure. It can be done alone or along with a facelift or blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery). It is usually performed in people who are between the ages of 35 and 60 but can be performed in younger people who have deep frown lines or older people with wrinkles of the forehead that they are not happy with. Those who are under a lot of stress and who do not respond to Botox treatments to the forehead can benefit from a forehead or brow lift procedure.

In order to qualify for a brow lift procedure, you need to have things like a low lying eyebrow from sagging tissue that leads to a sad or fatigued appearance. You can also have deep horizontal creases across the forehead or deep furrows between the top of the face and the eyebrow. Vertical wrinkles are not usually well treated with a brow lift.

Examination

The person who will do your brow lift is usually a plastic or cosmetic surgeon. He or she will ask you about your smoking history and advise you not to smoke as smoking contributes to these kinds of problems. You will also be asked to stay out of the sun. Getting too tanned will dry out your skin and make you more wrinkled all over, including your brow and face. The doctor will also examine your face to see if a brow lift is necessary. Sometimes other procedures will be recommended along with the brow lift.

Procedure

The forehead or brow lift is done by making an incision along the hairline above the forehead area. The skin will be separated from the underlying facial structures and excess fat will be trimmed off. This procedure can also be done endoscopically with several small incisions made instead of one big one. Muscles are tightened if needed and the skin is redraped over the forehead. Excess skin is trimmed off and tiny sutures are placed in the suture line. Sometimes incisions must be placed along the upper eyelids or elsewhere along existing lines in the forehead but this is not common.

The end result is that eyelids and brows that are lifted and wrinkles along the horizontal aspect of the forehead are removed. You look more youthful and less stressed out.

Side Effects

It is not common to have side effects of a brow lift. The most common side effects are bruising, temporary numbness of the forehead and infection of the affected area. You can get hematoma formation, which are large blood clots beneath the surface of the skin. The hematoma can go away using local heat. In other situations, it must be surgically removed before proper healing can take place.

Complications

More serious complications include having a poor result and looking worse than before or having permanent numbness of the forehead if the doctor cuts important nerves to the affected area. Injury to muscles can occur so you are unable to make the proper facial moves you would normally make or the look can be lopsided. Another unfavorable look is the constant look of surprise on the face that some people get when the brow lift was too extreme. You can help the outcome by stopping smoking as far as possible before the procedure as you can and stopping aspirin and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication so you reduce bleeding.

Surgery

The surgery can be performed in a free standing ambulatory care center, an office-based surgical suite or a hospital, which can affect the cost of the procedure. The cost is broken down into the surgeon’s fees, the anesthesia fee, the facility fee, surgical medications, surgical medications, medical tests and surgical garments.

If you are unhappy with the outcome of any cosmetic surgery you should initially discuss your reservations with the surgeon who carried out the work to see if he has any proposals to rectify the problem. The surgeon may be willing to make a refund or may provide further corrective surgery. If you are unable to resolve the matter directly with the surgeon you should take advice from a medical malpractice lawyer with a view to claiming compensation. Our brow lift medical malpractice lawyers offer advice at no cost on liability and an estimate of the amount of compensation that you are likely to be awarded, with no charge and without obligation.
